The First British Airways Flight Arrived in Male

On October 25, 2009, the first British Airways flight, direct from London Gatwick (LGW), arrived safely at the international airport of Male, capital city of the Maldives, with 272 tourists on board.

Tourist arrivals in the Maldives are highest from the UK, attracting around 100,000 British visitors each year.  Therefore, it was only logical for British Airways, the UK’s flagship airline, to open a direct route to the tropical island paradise.

The Maldives Tourism Promotion Board said they would be organising a special welcome for the maiden flight in order to give British Airways the warm welcome it so deserves.

British Airways Flies Directly to Male Three Times a Week

Direct flights from London Gatwick (LGW) to Male, Maldives (MLE) every Tuesday, Friday and Sunday.  The flight departs at 19:10. Flights from Male to London Gatwick leave at 13.20 every Monday, Wednesday and Saturday.  The flight lasts 10 hours going to the Maldives and 11 hours returning.  Prices are currently around GBP 650, including all taxes and surcharge in economy class.

First Class Air Travel to the Maldives

As well as the standard economy class service to the Maldives, British Airways also offers First, Business and Economy Plus, giving passengers a wider choice at the time of making their flight reservations.  First-class tickets, which provide the privilege of a flat bed, cost around GBP 2,875 including all taxes.
