Maldives Fishing Industry to Expand Techniques
Maldives Fishing Industry is going through hard times
The Maldives government plans to introduce an array of various fishing techniques, such as fly fishing, in an attempt to improve the situation of the Maldives Fishing Industry, which has been less than satisfactory in the past months.
Dr. Ibrahim Didi Talks About Maldives Fishing Industry
Maldivian minister of fisheries and agriculture Dr. Ibrahim Didi addressed the Maldivian press about the Maldives Fishing Industry, saying that a committee had been created to introduce a long-line fishing fleet in the Maldives.
“In long-line fishing, for example, big eye tuna, even though the number of fish caught is low, the revenue is much higher as it is a fish which can be sold at a very high price in Japan,” said Maldivian minister of fisheries and agriculture Ibrahim Didi.
Currently, those practicing Maldives fishing rely primarily on pole-and-line fishing, where fish are caught at the surface. This type of Maldives fishing is considered more environmentally friendly than other methods since, for example, long-line fishing, which employs long lines with baited hooks at intervals, can unintentionally snag and catch other creatures, such as turtles.
Dr. Mohamed Shiham Adam Talks About Maldives Fishing Industry
Maldives fishing expert Dr. Mohamed Shiham Adam, who is General Director of the Marine Research Centre (MRC), commented that fishermen currently throw bait onto the ocean’s surface. However, he added, “Due to a change in weather patterns, if fish stay deeper, fishermen will have difficulties in catching them by pole-and-line fishing.”
Maldives Fisherman Speaks Out
Maldives fisherman Mohamed Hassan believes that the Maldives government should research long-line fishing’s environmental impact prior introducing the technique to the Maldives.
“I believe it would disperse the schools of fish and affect their behavior,” said the Maldives fisherman. “If permitted, everyone would practice it, which would make it difficult for those who wanted to continue with pole-and-line fishing,”
Why the Maldives Fishing Industry is Catching Less
Maldives fishing expert Dr. Ibrahim Didi commented that Maldives depended greatly on weather. Sadly, the the increase in sea temperatures have negatively affected Maldives fishing.
Furthermore, the low bait catch is causing the Maldives Fishing Industry to catch less fish as well.
