Map of Maldives

A map of Maldives is an essential tool to any holiday in this exotic destination.  But, finding a map of Maldives is not as easy as you might expect.  The islands of the Maldives are spread out over an enormous distance, so a map of Maldives is a very long map, with not very much land mass at all.  We have put together a selection of maps of the atolls of the Maldives to help you get a better grasp of where everything is in the Maldives.

Black Pearl Liveaboard Spots Leaf Fish & Grey Reef Sharks & Perform Maaya Thila Night Dive

November 22nd, 2009 Hussein 1 comment

Black Pearl Liveaboard spots leaf fish & grey reef sharks, as well as performing night dive at Maaya Thila…

After an exciting night spent BBQing and star gazing, the scuba diving began a bit later than usual the next day…

Dive to Dega Thila

Dega Thila is a unique and unusual reef formation located at Ari Atoll, offering divers a very different kind of diving experience.

Dega Thila Marine Life

Located inside Ari Atoll, and very much protected from the currents, Dega Thila is famous for its colorful nudibranchs (often casually called “sea slugs”, a non-scientific term), cleaner shrimp, frog fish and leaf fish. The coral growth of Dega Thila is healthy, consisting mainlyof sponges, soft coral, black coral bushes and many more.

Dega Thila Characteristics

Dega Thila is divided into 2 parts, and each part consists of 2 or more coral heads rising from 30 meters to 5 meters. Dives usually begin at the deeper points and end at the shallower parts of the reef.

Dive to Hafsa Thila, aka Makaru Thila

The second dive was to Hafsa Thila, also called Makaru Thila, famous for being able to spot grey reef sharks at a very close distance. Divers don’t need to dive very deep, but rather stay at the edge of the reef at about 14 to 15 meters below and observe the sharks swimming back and forth.

Maaya Thila Night Dive

Maaya Thila night dive is one of the week’s highlights, a truly unforgettable experience that you will experience on your next Maldives liveaboard holiday.

On this particular night dive, divers can see a myriad of Maldivian marine life, such as white tip reef sharks chasing their prey, moray eels hunting their next meal, turtles darting amongst caves and overhangs, and much, much more!

MV Sting Ray’s projected route is to cover southern and northern Ari atoll, Rasdhoo atoll and at the last day at north Male’ atoll.

Sting Ray’s highest priority this week is to find whale shark as this was the request from the present dive group. Tomorrow sting ray will head out to search for the whale shark near Dhigurah Outer reef including Ari Beach Beyru.

If the weather conditions allow Sting Ray will include Maamigili Beyru, Holiday Island Beyru and Sun Island Beyru during whale shark search.

This morning at Kandooma Thila the current was running in at medium to strong, so we decided to begin the dive from Cocoa Corner and cross the channel and finish the dive at Kandooma Thila.

We jumped to Cocoa Corner and once all the divers were underwater we began to swim towards the corner and by facing the current we swam all the way to the middle of the channel and drifted inside the channel and finally ended at the Thila.

Many Gray Reef sharks were lingering at the channel entrance, while a few white tips congregated near the Thila and a school of eagle rays were also among the highlights.

The second dive we did at southern Ari atoll, Omadhoo Thila, with almost no current. This was not good for a big fish dive, but it was a rather relaxing dive with heaps of small fish instead.

The third dive was to 5 Rocks where the current was very strong, but all the divers managed to make a quick descent and get the protection of the reef. We saw a few white tips from the up current including dog tooth tunas and tons of fusiliers. After some time we drifted into the tiny channel and swam through it all until the shadow.

The visibility was poor in both the atolls but the dives turned out to very enjoyable. The weather is great with calm seas and the temperature remains at a sunny 30 degrees Celsius.

Tomorrow is a big day because we are going for a whale shark search after the first dive. For today our final anchorage is Dhangethi lagoon, and after the dive some of the divers went off to the island for an excursion.

Incredibly clear visibility at Ari atoll today.

To our surprise today’s visibility has been incredibly clear on all the three dives!

Our morning began at 6:30, with our first stop to Maaya Thila, where there was a strong current, leading us to have one of the best fish life dives so far. Some of the species we saw include white tip reef sharks, gray reef sharks, tunas, jacks and many more.

For the second jump we took the divers to Dega Thila at 11:00 A.M. The dive site has unique reef formations which looked stunning because of the excellent visibility. Everyone had quite an enjoyable dive.

The third and last jump of the day was to Radhdhiggaa Thila also called Dhigaa Thila. With almost no current, there was little chance of spotting any fascinating fish, but visibility remained clear, so we got to explorer the caves and overhangs, getting close ups of the gorgonian fan corals and the colorful soft corals that cover the reef.

The weather remained stable, but there were gusty winds at times with mildly rough seas, and mainly overcast sky the whole day. However, the evening was nice enough to give us the chance to do the boduberu barbecue on Raidhigaa island, which all the divers seemed to really enjoy.
