Diving Safety: Theia Introduces Electronic Diver Location System Feb 10, 2012

Maldives Dive Travel is proud to announce the introduction of the ENOS security system on board of Theia, one of our most popular liveaboards.

ENOS is an abbreviation of the German product name Elektronisches Notruf und Ortungs System, which literally translates to Electronic Emergency and Locating System. As the name implies, this system is designed to support the search and safety of divers.

Divers with ENOS

As you may know, when scuba diving it is not uncommon to resurface at locations some distance away from the dive boat, sometimes too far to swim back. Due to strong underwater currents, or simply the lure of the unknown deep in the ocean, it is common that a scuba diver will drift off course and resurface at a faraway location. It is for situations like these, which may at times be critical, that the ENOS system was developed.

ENOS consists of two parts - the Global Positioning System (GPS) receiver, and one or more radio transmitters. The system is completely self-contained and does not require the assistance of other third party rescue services/systems.

ENOS Diving Safety System

How it works is simple; the receiver acts as the base station, wherefrom the rescue operation is initiated. Once the system is active, its position is located using GPS and now can receive and process signals from the radio transmitters. Once the transmitters are in use, their location can be tracked via GPS. The exact position of the transmitters, as well as their distance and direction from the receiver itself can be easily determined using the graphical display on the base station.

ENOS Display

Here are the key features of the ENOS system:

  • Direct transmission of diver's GPS position to the boat

  • Receiving, evaluation and displaying of multiple alerts simultaneously

  • Precise information of distances to the divers

  • Precise information of bearing to the divers

  • Precise information of GPS position of the divers

  • Easy understandable graph on ENOS®-Receiver screen

  • License free and free of charge! No additional costs

  • Easy to operate, even under stress

  • Independent from international rescue institutions (coast guards, SAR, etc.)

  • Functions reliable and quickly, even in remote areas

  • Receiving range approx. 12 km / 6.5 NM

After very successful initial test runs, the ENOS safety system will be implemented first and foremost on Theia and is provided freeof charge for all buddy teams.

We at Maldives Dive Travel take the safety and security of our esteemed guests very seriously and welcome the use of ENOS in diving operations. All our ships offer top-of-the-line equipment and instruments, as well as experienced crews of dive masters and certified guides.
